Nature through the eyes of my camera

Wednesday 14th August - Distance 4 miles Route taken: Snape Maltings, River Alde, Snape Marshes, Snape Warren, Blackheath Marshes, A1094 (Time taken 2.15 hours) Having had a break from my walks to holiday with my family and to fit in some photography I was looking forward to walking the path again. My daughter accompanied me on this walk, it was good to have some company. We started from Snape Maltings. The Maltings are one of the world's leading center's of music as well as being an area of outstanding natural beauty. They sit beside the River Alde. We followed the Alde through Snape Marshes. This area is owned by Suffolk Wildlife Trust.  It was warm and the breeze could be heard rustling through the reeds. We passed four Egrets as we walked along.  Apart from Ragwort most of the wild flowers had gone except the hedge Bindweed which was in full bloom. (Sunday 31st March - 2.7 miles. Route taken: Sea wall & marshes. Time taken 1hr. 45min) I was looking forward to this section of the walk as I have not walked here before. Unfortunately the weather was not as forecast and there was very heavy cloud and a strong north easterly wind. I found the going tough especially with the very uneven ground. However the wind surfers were having a great time. I felt very alone, just me and my thoughts in this very desolate place. I heard the occasional call of an oystercatcher and a skylark. There were waders in some of the mud flats. I trudged on, battling against the wind.  During World War II the quiet marshes became an area of strategic importance for siting defenses designed to stop a Germany invasion in this part of Suffolk.  July and September 1940, saw 633 pillboxes constructed in Suffolk. Several of these can be seen on the Suffolk Coastal walk. As I walked on I couldn't help thinking about the soldiers who had spent weeks/month...

  Tuesday 15th September Walberswick and Westwood Marshes Another beautiful day to follow a Gill Moon walk, this time along the dunes of Walberswick, through to Westwood Marshes. Dunes at Walberswick We crossed one of the old wooden bridges and headed for the dunes. Walking along the dunes we watched people arriving for a day on the beach. We passed many black beach huts and some holiday lets. Black Beach Huts Holiday Let Reaching the end of the dunes we cross a bridge and follow the river through the reeds to the marsh. Bridge across the river Before turning onto the marshes we pass the old tide mill which once would have been used to drain the land.  It was also used to grind corn for animal feed.
