Winter Storms (October 23)

Image
Winter weather arrived with a bang in October 2023 with Storm Babet. It hit the whole country with East Anglia, and especially Suffolk being badly hit. Roads were flooded, houses were flooded and even villages were cut off. Schools and offices were flooded and even if they weren't people who lived out of town had difficulty in reaching their destination due to flooded roads. Parts of Suffolk had nearly two months worth of rain in four days in the wake of Storm Babet. A major incident was declared in the county on Friday , as persistent rain and high winds caused flooding and major disruption Framlingham was one of the worst hit towns, with 70 homes affected, while a herd of cows nearly drown. The water in the Railway Inn reached the window sills. The villages of Upper Layham and Lower Layham were completely cut off from each other. Villages who had lived in Upper Layham for more than 40 years had never seen the water so high or so far spread. The area between the Granary and the M

Dartmoor (September 2023)

Saturday 16th September Today was the only day it was looking like we would be able to go onto Dartmoor due to the very poor weather predicted this week. We sorted ourselves out and packed a lunch and were off. We managed to negotiate the long, meandering, single track road better going down than coming up yesterday. We didn’t have far to drive before we were in Dartmoor National Park. It was looking quite bright but there were some ominous clouds in the distance. We had marked some points where we thought it would be interesting to take photos. Our first stop was Cox Tor. We wandered towards the Tor but not up it. Some sheep kindly wandered into the shot and the sun came out a couple of times and illuminated the bracken. Cox Tor Next stop was Merrivale where we took shots of Great Mis Tor. From here we crossed Two Bridges and drove to Postbridge where we were able to get good photos of the Clapper Bridge.  Merrivale Village and Mis Tor Post bridge Clapper Bridge We had intended

Today we travelled on from Bristol stopping at Nether Stowey, where we wandered round the village, stopping to take photos of Samuel Coeridge's house. Samuel Coleridge was a poet and philosopher and wrote the famous poem-the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.                                                                       Samuel Coleridge House We then travelled on towards the Quantock hills and through the Great Wood.  It was a wood of mostly oak and ash trees.      The Great Wood From here we travelled to Porlock where we stopped for lunch, and did some grocery shopping. (Funny place, all the restaurants, including the pubs were either closed until the evening or only serving drinks. Our final destination for the day was Porlock Weir. Having got our bearings and booked ourselves a table at the local inn for Sunday lunch we found our accommodation for the week. Apartment on the right hand side We were up and about early on Sunday so we went for a walk along the beach (just 400m fr
