Service - Volunteer at the village hall

 24th March - 31st October

I am the Booking Secretary at the village hall and the time taken to do this roll is not included for my Bronze Voyage Award.

I have taken on extra voluntary work at the village hall this year as there is no cleaner or gardener. I have been to the hall on three occasions to give the hall a thorough clean. Besides this I wipe down the kitchen surfaces and wash the floor, sweep the hall and check and clean the toilets on a regular basis. At the end of October a group of committee members came along to give all the windows, inside and out a clean, and a thorough clean of the complete building including the cupboards and all the tables. 

Grass cutting and gardening

My husband and I have mowed the grass and  trimmed the edges 4 times this season. I have tended the garden. We have swept all paved areas and weeded round the front of the building.

Book Sale

The book sale is one of the biggest fund raising events of the year and it requires a lot of setting up and clearing away afterwards. My husband and I set out the tables and placed all the bags and boxes of books, in alphabetical order ready to be set out on the tables the next day.  A team of five of us arrived to set out books and sort through and add new books that had arrived during the year. Friday we continued setting up. The book sale took place on the Sunday where I was selling books, serving teas and then after the sale packing the books that were left away, ready for next year.

Painting and Decorating

The entrance hall had become rather an eye sore so my husband and I agreed to redecorate it having had no luck in getting a painter and decorator in to do it for us. We rubbed all the paint work down and got rid of all the spiders. Painting began the next day. Unfortunately we had to apply 3 coats of emulsion to cover the existing grey paint so it took longer than anticipated. The doors were given a good wash as these were not the sort that had to be painted. The gloss paint was then applied to the wood work.
