Walking the Suffolk Coastal Path Kessingland to Benacre (Walk 18)
Wednesday 21st August - Distance 2.4 miles Route taken: Beach, shingle and track. Time taken 1.30hrs.
Having had a pleasant stay over night at the Hotel Victoria we decided to walk back to where the walking men were to try and take photos while there weren't many people about. There was a total change in the weather today. There was a strong southerly wind blowing and it was much cooler. The wind was whipping up the sand on the beach.
I found the beach along this section fascinating with its pristine surface as far as you could see.
Time to collect the car and make our way back to Kessingland so I could continue my journey to Benacre. I had delayed the start as long as I could. I wasn't looking forward to walking this section. I would be walking into a strong head wind on uneven ground, on my own. I passed more beach huts as I headed along the coast heading out from Kessingland.
A lone hut stood forlorn above the shingle, presumably belonging to a fisherman.
Marram grass bent over as the wind howled, blowing dust and grit into my face. The waves crashed againgst the shingle and the stones could be heard groaning as the sea receded.
Having crossed the the Hundred river I headed inland where it was more sheltered as the bracken created a shield. Hidden amongst the bracken was another pill box. One of many I have seen on the coastal walk.
Clumps of purple heather sat amongst the bracken, its colours contrasting with the brown and greens around it.
There were few flowers around but the dainty harebell nodding silently in the breeze called out to be photographed. I perched on the ground waiting for the wind to abate long enough to get a shot. Patience
paid off although far from a perfect shot.
I was at the point where I needed to turn right and head along a farm track towards Benacre. Parts of the track had broken away and fallen into the sea. Another casualty of coastal erosion. The track led me passed beet fields. Blue flowers of chicory were growing at the side of the track.
I met my husband walking along the track towards me. We walked back towards the car and had a well earned lunch before heading for home.
Another stretch accomplished.
